Mike Rich LAT, ATC

Executive Director

Mike has been involved with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team since 1990, and served as a Program Manager since 1994. Having been raised on a ranch in southwest Kansas, he was familiar with the program and began as a Program Associate covering rodeos in Arizona while attending Arizona State University. Mike is a graduate of ASU where he received dual degrees in exercise science and education. He is also a Nationally Certified Athletic Trainer who has served on the state board of directors as well as national association committees. In 1991, Mike opened a physical therapy clinic, SPORT Rehabilitation in Mesa, Arizona. Later, he became Regional Co-Director for Physiotherapy Associates, managing the operation of physical therapy clinics throughout Arizona. In 2007, Mike started the Restore Group of physical therapy clinics in Arizona. He recently sold his Restore Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Clinics as well as the one he owned and managed in Gilbert. Upon Don Andrews retirement in 2009, Mike was awarded the title of Executive Director of the Justin Sportsmedicine Team, and now manages and directs each aspect of the program. Lives in Queen Creek Arizona with his wife Kelly and their blended family of Jake, Josh, Seth, and Hudson.

Tandy R. Freeman

Medical Director

Tandy R. Freeman, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon based in Dallas, TX, is the Medical Director and Head Team Doctor of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Justin Sportsmedicine Team. Tandy began working with rodeo cowboys as an orthopedic surgeon in 1994 and is now considered one of the premier rodeo physicians in the world. In this role and as Medical Director of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR), he attends to rodeo and bull riding athletes at over 100 PRCA and PBR performances a year, has witnessed over 50,000 bull rides in the past 17 years, and has tended to thousands of athletes from the high school level to professional world champions. In addition to caring for rodeo athletes, he has served in various roles for a number of amateur and professional teams including Head Team Physician for the Dallas Mavericks (National Basketball Association, 1996-2001), as well as maintaining a sports medicine practice devoted to treating the injuries of all types of athletes. Tandy and his wife Maureen live in Dallas, TX.

Jason Magonye MD

Medical Co-Director

Jason A. Mogonye, MD is a Primary Care Sports Medicine physician based in Fort Worth, Texas. He grew up in a farming, ranching, and rodeo family in central Texas. A graduate of Tarleton State University, Jason began volunteering with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team in 2009 while still in his Family Medicine residency training. He was blessed to have the opportunity to spend many weekends at the Mesquite, Texas rodeo learning from Dr. J Pat Evans and his passion for caring for the rodeo athlete. After completing his Sports Medicine Fellowship, he became faculty at the JPS Sports Medicine fellowship program where he serves as the Assistant Program Director. Jason has been a team physician at Texas Christian University since 2012 and has worked with several other collegiate and high school programs in the DFW Metroplex. He is also deeply involved in medical education by teaching athletic training students, medical students, residents, and fellows. When not providing sports medicine care, Jason can be found back in central Texas helping out on his family’s farming and ranching operation or spending time in the outdoors. Jason lives in Fort Worth, Texas.

Rick Foster MS, LAT, ATC

Program Manager

Rick grew up in Colorado and was active with ranch work in the summer and skiing in the winter. He graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Master of Science in Exercise Physiology. Rick was a rodeo athlete competing at the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association level and was a NCAA Division I ski racer at CU-Boulder. He did his thesis with the United States Ski Team focusing on prediction of ski performance. Rick incorporated sports performance and sports medicine education while completing internships with local high school sports, the US Ski Team, the United States Olympic Training Center, and pro rodeo. While in college, Rick organized the first rodeo sports medicine coverage and educational seminars for the National Little Britches Rodeo Association in 1979. He got involved with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team in 1981 as a volunteer and was hired as Program Manager in 1985. In 2010 Rick went full time as the Program Director of the Justin Sportsmedicine Team. He enjoys downhill skiing, water skiing, horses, and any outdoor activity with his family. Rick lives in Longmont, Colorado with his wife Christine on their horse ranch and has two adult children, Shayla and Owen.

Amanda Elder EdD, LAT, ATC

Athletic Trainer / Research Coordinator

Mandi Elder is an Associate Professor of athletic training. at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs where she is the Program Director for the Master of Science in Athletic Training program. Mandi has been at UCCS since 2008 and has taught at the collegiate level since 1997. Prior to returning to Colorado, Mandi was the clinical coordinator for the undergraduate athletic training program at Southeast Missouri State University. She earned her doctorate from Oklahoma State University, her Masters from San Jose State University and her Bachelors from Adams State College. Mandi has been involved in research in emergency action planning and rodeo injuries. Mandi works as an athletic trainer with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team, and serves as the team’s research coordinator. Mandi lives in Colorado Springs with her husband Craig, and they enjoy getting outdoors as often as possible.

Doin Dahlke M.Ed., LAT, ATC

Program Manager

Doin has been involved with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team since 1987 as a Program Associate and has served as a Program Manager since 2014. He is employed now by Henry Schein, Inc. in sales of Sport Medicine Products. He has worked in all divisions of athletics from Division I, II, Junior College as well as Clinic and High School as an Athletic Trainer. He grew up on a farm in north central Arkansas and was active in show cattle as well as team roping. Doin graduated from Arkansas Tech University and now lives in Van Buren, Arkansas with his wife Karen and they have two grown daughters BreAnne Rogers and Kelsey Six as well as one granddaughter and another grand baby coming soon.

Jill Miller LAT

Program Manager

Jill has worked with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team as a Licensed Athletic Trainer volunteer at the PRCA Mesquite Championship Rodeo since the summer of 1998. She was at the rodeo most Fridays and Saturdays from April to September and moved to the position of Justin Sportsmedicine Team Program Manager in 2005. Along with her duties at the Mesquite Rodeo, Jill now covers a number of events throughout the country. In 2009 she received the Mobile Sports Medicine Systems buckle. This is award is named after the program’s founder, Dr. J. Pat Evans. She is a native of Southern California and graduated from the University of North Texas in 1998 and obrtained a Masters in Educatiional Administration from Lamar University in 2011. In addition to working with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team, Jill also teaches Special Education and coaches Varsity Softball in Little Elm, Texas where her 2019 team was in the top 8 in the state of Texas. Jill and her husband, Chad, currently live in McKinney, Texas with their 2 dogs Thelma and Louise.

Leslie Jackson LAT, ATC

Program Manager

Leslie has worked with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team since 2001 when she began as a volunteer at the New Mexico State Fair. In 2014 Leslie became a Program Manager for Justin Sportsmedicine covering rodeos across the country. Prior to working with Justin Sportsmedicine Leslie obtained her Bachelors of Athletic Training from the University of New Mexico. In addition to working rodeo, Leslie covers multiple levels of semi-professional and junior ice hockey throughout the United States. In addition to her Athletic Training duties, Leslie teaches multiple classes at Rio Grande High School. Leslie is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico where she grew up working in her family’s sporting goods store. Leslie is an avid reader who enjoys traveling, and outdoor activities with family and friends. Leslie lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her dog Bailey.

Mike Stratton DSc, PT, ATC, MA

Program Manager

Michael Stratton, DSc (Doctor of Sports and Sciences), PT, ATC, MA, is the owner of Stratton Sports Medicine. Mike attended NAU (Northern Arizona University) where he received his degrees in Physical Therapy, Athletic training, and Education with an emphasis in Biomechanics. He went on to complete his Doctoral program in Sports Science at Rocky Mountain University in Utah. Mike has dedicated the past 32 years to serving individual and community needs by improving their overall health and well-being through physical therapy and athletic training. Not only is he passionate about creating an educational environment for patients, but also mentoring students entering the fields of rehabilitation and sports performance. Mike specializes in orthopedic and sports injuries for all populations. His areas of expertise include neck, shoulder, elbow, hip, low back, knee, foot and ankle. He provides sports performance enhancement training to individuals in rodeo, track, golf, tennis, and many other sports. Mike is a proud member of the Justin Sports medicine team where he travels and treats profession rodeo cowboys and cowgirls. He has worked for the Arizona Rattlers, a professional arena football team and for the United States Olympic Soccer and Track & Field teams. Mike works with numerous athletes/weekend warriors from junior high, high school, college and professional settings. He also enjoys volunteering with the local club and school athletic programs. Dr. Stratton is the author of Ultimate Careers in Sports Medicine: The Definitive Guide to Selecting and Training for a Career in Physical Therapy, Physical Therapy Assistant , or Athletic Training. His article “The Efficacy of Low-Frequency Electrical Stimulation in the Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis” was published in the Journal of American Podiatric Medical Association. Additionally, Mike has given numerous lectures in the field of Sports Rehabilitation and performance. He is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the National Athletic Trainer Association (NATA).

Shayla Foster MS, LAT, ATC

Program Manager

Shayla was born and raised in Colorado where she was active outdoors helping on her parent’s farm, showing her horse in all-around IBHA classes, and alpine ski racing for Winter Park Competition Center. She received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Chapman University in Orange, California and her Master of Science in Health and Human Movement from Utah State University. She was the graduate student athletic trainer for Football and Gymnastics at USU. In 2015 she became the clinic coordinator for the OCR Concussion Clinic in Fort Collins, Colorado where she distributed cognitive tests, created exertion exercise programs, and assisted in research with concussion in rodeo athletes. Shayla grew up around rodeo and was excited to join the Justin Sportsmedicine Team as an associate in 2013 for a variety of rodeos in Colorado, Wyoming, and California. She became a manager in 2017 and works consistently at the Greeley Stampede, Central Wyoming Fair, and Cheyenne Frontier Days. Currently, Shayla is the head athletic trainer at a 5A high school in Idaho and teaches their sports medicine classes. Shayla lives in Boise with her fiancé, Kalani who is also an Athletic Trainer and in Physician Assistant School. They enjoy paddle boarding, skiing, fishing, snow shoeing, and surfing together.

Tyler Oberlander MS LAT ATC NREMT

Tyler Oberlander is the head athletic trainer at Great Plains Health in North Platte, NE. He founded the Great Plains Health Rodeo Sports Medicine Team in 2015, providing sports medicine coverage at high school, amateur, and professional rodeos. The Great Plains Health Sports Medicine Team provides coverage for 30-40 rodeos yearly focusing on their NIRA collegiate partners in the Great Plains Region, the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) partners, as well as the local PRCA rodeo committee partners in Nebraska and Kansas. In 2018, Tyler was named Director of Sports Medicine for both the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association and the Indian National Finals Rodeo. Tyler has a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and a master’s degree in sports administration from South Dakota State.

Chad Smidt MA, LAT, ATC

Program Manager

Chad is an athletic trainer who is employed by Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies in Fort Collins Colorado where he serves as Sports Medicine/ Outreach Director. He attended Adams State University where he received both his BA(1990) and MA (1991) degrees. First event for JST was 1992 Denver National Western. Has provided care at all levels of rodeo including: National Little Britches Rodeo Association, National High School Rodeo Association, National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, and Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Also provides sports medicine care for USA Wrestling at national and international events. When not covering rodeo, he enjoys playing golf with his wife DeeDee.

Erik Nason ATC

Program Manager

Erik, a Certified Athletic Trainer originally from Pennsylvania, moved south to Florida in 1998. Erik is employed as an ATC at the Kennedy Space Center's onsite sports medicine program. Its purpose is to serve the needs of the employees and to support astronaut care during launch and landing. During this time, Erik became a Program Associate with the Justin Boots Sportsmedicine Team, assisting Program Manager Dale Kiecke in the coverage of several Florida rodeos. In 2002, he became a Program Manager for the Justin Boots Sportsmedicine Team covering the Southeastern Circuit and several events along the Xtreme Bull Tour. Erik did not grow up in the sport of rodeo but had a love for extreme sports and the Justin Boots Sportsmedicine Team was a perfect fit. Erik's love for extreme sports opened opportunities to work with the American Lemans Racing Series where he has provided sports medicine care for the past 10 years to teams such as Factory Corvette Racing, North American Audi Racing, and Penske Racing. He covers professional Wake Boarding events in Florida as well. Erik resides in Titusville, FL and is married to his beautiful wife Jennifer and has two awesome children, Chloe and Chase.

Travis Chipman M.S., L.A.T, EMT

Travis Chipman, a Licensed Athletic Trainer, and Emergency Medical Technician originally from Southeastern Idaho, moved to South Texas in 1982. Travis received his athletic training degree from Southwest Texas State University 1989. During his high school and college years Travis participated in the National High School Rodeo Association and the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Travis participated in tie down, steer wrestling and team roping. Travis’ father was a professional bull rider, that is where he gained his passion of rodeo. Travis first started volunteering with the Justin Sportsmedicine program in the late 1980’s at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He went on to become a full-time high school athletic trainer and was not able to return to volunteer work until 2004 At that time he started volunteering at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo where he is both the Vice Chair of the Medical Committee and a Program Manager with the Justin Sportsmedicine program Travis is now retired from secondary education, where he was a full-time athletic trainer for 19 years and taught Health Science Specifically an emergency medical technician class for 8 years. Travis also worked for his team physician in his sports medicine practice as their clinical coordinator for 2 years. Travis is also the Vice Chair of the Medical Committee for the San Antonio Rodeo and He has been married to his supportive (and part-time travel partner) wife Megan for almost 30 years. His sons, Tyler, and Coleman have traveled with him throughout his career. Without the support and understanding of his family, none of this wonderful life would be possible.

Shawn Ready MS, ATC, CSCS

Program Manager

He received a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Sports Studies with concentration in Athletic Training. While at EIU he rodeoed, competing in bareback riding in armature organizations. After completion at EIU, Shawn had several stops in his journey including an internship with the NFL New England Patriots in 2008 and primary athletic trainer for baseball at Texas State University. While at Texas State Shawn received a Master of Science in athletic training, doing his graduate thesis in “correlation of handedness and center of gravity in PRCA bull riders”. It was in 2009 that he began volunteering with Justin. In 2017 after spending 8 years in college athletics finishing in Division 1 football, Shawn took on a near full time role as Program Manager working up to 22 rodeos yearly with JST. Since then he has become a intermittent role covering 10-12 rodeos yearly while working for Methodist Healthcare in San Antonio, Texas as a Sports Medicine Outreach Coordinator and Director of Education. Shawn is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and holds his Level 1 USA weightlifting certification. He uses these with his online training business shawnready.com that he does distance/ online coaching of rodeo and field sport strength and conditioning athletes as well as group classes and personal training. Shawn lives in San Antonio with his fiancé Katie.

Jenny Allen PT, ATC, CSCS

Program Manager

Jenny is a native Tucsonan who completed her Bachelor of Science in General Biology at the University of Arizona. After graduating from the University of Arizona, Jenny went on to obtain a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA followed by a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. Jenny’s first job was at Purdue University where she was the athletic trainer for the 1999 NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship team. After spending 2 years working at Purdue, Jenny had the opportunity to return to her hometown of Tucson where she has worked on the athletic training staff at the University of Arizona since 2000. She serves as the Physical Therapy and Sportsmedicine Supervisor for the University of Arizona Campus Health Services and also works as an associate athletic trainer in intercollegiate athletics. Jenny is also a partner in a local Tucson physical therapy clinic, The Physioshop. In addition to her credentials as an athletic trainer and physical therapist, she is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Jenny originally started as a volunteer with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team and became a Program Manager in 2015. She lives in Tucson her “Cowboy Corgi”, Woodrow (or Woody if you know him well)

Chris Swanner ATC, LAT, PTA

Program Manager

Chris started with the Justin Sportsmedicine Team as an Associate in 2001 in California and has worked with the program as a Program Manager since 2011.He is from North Carolina and grew up in Uruguay where he was introduced to ranching and rodeo. He attended Chowan University and graduated with a degree in P.E. with an emphasis in Athletic Training. He then spent a couple of years playing minor league soccer in California before returning to Physical Therapy Assistant school in AZ. He currently lives in Fredericksburg, TX with his wife Kimberly and 2 daughters Lily and Elizabeth and works at an Outpatient Physical Therapy in town and helping on his wife’s family ranch.

Susan Ganz PhD, ATC

Program Manager

Susan Ganz is a Professor of Kinesiology at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) and thrilled to be a part of the Justin Sports Medicine Team. She has been at PLNU since 1997. From 1997-2018 she was a dual appointment (teaching and clinician). In 2018 PLNU added a MSAT program, and she transitioned to full time teaching. Susan is knowledgeable in Exercise Science, earning her doctorate from University of New Mexico, her master’s from Austin Peay State University and her bachelor’s from Azusa Pacific University Susan started with the Justin Sports medicine Team as an Associate in 1998, covering primarily southern California rodeos and the California circuit finals and as a Program Manager since 2021. Susan has been passionate about caring for athletes her entire career. From working with D1 football, world class track athletes and collegiate athletes to youth rugby. Susan cares for the whole individual through both preventative care, rehabilitation, return to play and mental wellness Susan has received numerous awards due to her dedication to the profession including CUATC NAIA athletic trainer of the year (2005, 2009) and PLNU Hall of Fame (class of 2018). She and her husband Shayne live in Escondido Ca. She is an avid gardener and enjoys trail running with her border collie Chase.
